Zina Saro-Wiwa and Mangrove Arts Foundation in Basel.
On Thursday 14th June 2018, Zina Saro-Wiwa participated in a panel held as part of Basel's Discussions programme discussing Mangrove Arts Foundation and Boys' Quarters. The number of artist-endowed foundations has grown rapidly in the past twenty years. This rising impulse for artists to use their means and recognition to set up foundations and non-profits that support younger artists and/or their local communities, instead of foundations for themselves, is meaningful. A small number of artist-endowed foundations have already made big changes, for example, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. As an unprecedented number of contemporary artists rise to new heights they can play a significant role in shaping cultural philanthropy. Zina spoke alongside Emily Jacir, Artist, Founding Director, Dar Yusuf Nasri Jacir for Art and Research and Matteo Lucchetti, Exhibitions and Public Program Curator, BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, and Artistic Co-Director, Visible Project, Utrecht. The moderator was Yona Backer, Founding Partner, Third Streaming, LLC, New York.
